USAID Donates $37m To IDPs In Lake Chad Basin

The United State Agency for International Development (USAID), said it will provide over $37million to victims of conflicts throughout Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin .

The was disclosed by the Director of Foreign Disaster Assistance of the USAID ,Mr Jeremy Konyndyk during a courtesy call to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) .

With this donation, the USAID has donated over $318 million to assist the Boko Haram humanitarian crisis in Nigeria and these funds go through US selected agencies, who make the donation through provision of materials, not giving cash to NEMA or any other Nigeria agency.

Speaking at the function, Konyndyk, who led his team to the headquarters of NEMA said the team was on a mission to access the incident in north east.

According to him, “There is gradual improvement in the security conditions and humanitarian situation remain dire. Throughout the region, approximately 5million people need emergency food assistance and 2.5 million people are displaced.”

He said the agency is committed to do more, while calling on other donor agencies to render assistance.

While responding, the Director National Emergency Management Agency, Mohammed Sani Sidi, who appreciated the kind gesture and collaboration with USAID, emphasised that his agency is looking forward to collaborate with USAID in the “provision of psychological support to the traumatized peoples; reconciliation and peace building , provision of assistance to the youth in form of skills acquisition / training  and development of Nigeria Incident Management System”.

The DG said the agency and the Nigeria government is showing its gratitude to the United State of America in responding to the victims of Boko Harama insurgency and their support for strengthen disaster management in Nigeria by sending two experts in the area of National incident management system to the agency.
