Anti-mugabe protest in Harare, Police tear gas and beat protesters
  • August 26, 2016

-Anietie Udobit

Police in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, are firing tear gas at those trying to gather for a big anti-government march.
They are also beating protesters with batons.
The demonstrators are gathering at some open ground near the magistrates court in the city known as “Freedom Square”.
The demonstration is organised by a coalition of opposition groups, under the name National Electoral Reform Agenda (Nera). The people are calling for comprehensive political reforms ahead of the 2018 elections when 92-year-old President Robert Mugabe intends to stand again.
The report says police are targeting those in red T-shirts – worn by opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) supporters – for a beating.antimugabe 2
Zimbabwe’s High Court has granted the opposition parties order to march in Harare between noon local time and 16:00 (15:00 BST).
But police have already being firing tear gas, water canon and beating those gathering this morning.
Outside the High Court, Douglas Mwonzora of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), said protesters were determined.
Despite the tear gas at the venue we are proceeding with the march. It’s not a wedding. We know that. It’s not going to be easy. We are going to march regardless whether they beat us or not.”
