Buhari Constitutes Presidential Transition Council ahead of May 29 handover

President Muhammadu Buhari has constituted a Presidential Transition Council ahead of the may 29 handover to new administration. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, announced the approval yesterday, in a statement signed on his behalf by Director, Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Willie Bassey.

The statement said the transition council would be inaugurated by the SGF on February 14.

Members of the committee, according to the statement, include the SGF as chairman, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Solicitor-General of the Federation, and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice.

The committee also has Permanent Secretaries from the following ministries and offices: Defence, Interior, Finance, Budget and National Planning, Foreign Affairs, Information and Culture, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Cabinet Affairs Office, General Services Office, and Economic and Political Affairs Office, and State House.

The transition committee includes National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff, Inspector-General of Police, Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Director General, State Security Services, Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and two representatives to be nominated by the president-elect.

Buhari, also yesterday, signed Executive Order No. 14 of 2023 on the Facilitation and Management of the Presidential Transitions.

According to the statement, a key feature of the Presidential Executive Order No. 14 of 2023, is the institutionalisation of a legal framework that would enable a seamless transition of power from one presidential administration to another, which was part of the Buhari legacy.
