  • March 19, 2023
  • Unity Times

The National Population Commission (NPC) has said the 2023 population census will be conducted digitally. This, according to the Commission, will be in line with the United Nations (UN) recommendations for the 2020 round of census that countries should leverage on digital tool for the conduct of the census.

The Census Manager, Dr. Inuwa Jalingo, who gave the hint at a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists on effective reporting of the 2023 population and housing census, held in Abeokuta last Friday, said the goals of adopting technology in the 2023 census include tracking and ensuring complete coverage of the country during the exercise, reducing errors in the entire process, including field data collection and reducing timelines as well as facilitate efficient deployment of resources.

Jalingo added that the adoptive and redeployment of digital technology would engender confidence in the entire census process, thereby, ensuring that the data produced is reliable and accepted for use in development planning for the country.

Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Isiaka Yahaya, who spoke on how to generate media contents on the census, said that the aims and objectives of the workshop was to improve the capacity of journalists to effectively and professionally report the processes and outcomes of the 2023 census.

He said: “The contents also aimed at improving the quality of media contents and informed reporting on the 2023 census.

“It is also to build the capacity of journalists in the mainstreaming of census processes and outcomes in media reporting as well as receiving feedbacks and suggestions from the journalists on preparation for the 2023 census.”
