Senate Screens Tinubu’s Ministerial Nominees
  • July 31, 2023
  • Unity Times

The Nigerian Senate has commenced the screening of ministerial nominees from President Bola Tinubu’s list on Monday. Among the nominees facing scrutiny are former governors Wike, El-Rufai, Umahi, and several others, drawn from 25 states across the country.

President Tinubu submitted the list of 28 nominees to the upper legislative chamber just one day before the expiration of the 60-day constitutional deadline on 28th July. As has been the case with previous Nigerian leaders, the president did not attach specific portfolios to the nominees.

The list features a diverse array of individuals with varied backgrounds and experiences. It includes four former governors, six former federal lawmakers, two former lawmakers, three serving presidential advisers, and seven women, among others.

Prior to the screening process, the federal government directed all nominees to complete necessary documentation at the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President at the National Assembly complex. This preliminary step aimed to ensure that all nominees were fully prepared for the rigorous exercise.

The Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, has assured the nation that this time around, the screening process will be more thorough and in-depth than before. The senators are determined to thoroughly examine the nominees’ qualifications, character, and potential contributions to governance.

During the screening, each nominee’s home state representatives, comprising three senators, will have the opportunity to speak in support or against their respective nominees before the questioning phase begins. This traditional practice sets the tone for the overall screening process.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the practice of allowing some former and serving lawmakers to “take a bow and go” without facing in-depth questioning. Critics argue that this privilege may not effectively ensure a comprehensive scrutiny of the nominees.

Notably, some nominees might face a more rigorous screening process, especially if there are petitions or suspicions related to their potential ministry assignments.

Once the thorough screening process is completed, the Senate will convene the committee of the Whole to deliberate and ultimately decide whether to confirm or reject each nominee. The Senate President will then announce the final decision, shaping President Tinubu’s cabinet and paving the way for the next phase of governance.

Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the screening process, hoping for the emergence of a capable and qualified cabinet that will contribute to the nation’s growth and development under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
