Nnamdi Kanu Disbands Legal, Medical Team
  • January 12, 2024
  • Unity Times

The acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has disbanded his legal team, currently led by Mike Ozekhome (SAN).

The IPOB leader also sacked his medical team for not being able to present a medical report that would prove his alleged heart-related illness.

This is coming after the judgement of the Supreme Court held on Friday, December 15, 2023, which ordered the continuation of the trial of Kanu on terrorism charges.

Recall that the case, which started in 2015, had been put on hold at the Federal High Court in Abuja after the Court of Appeal dismissed the charges in a judgement delivered in October 2022.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had anchored its decision dismissing the charges on the illegality of the “extraordinary rendition” of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021 to continue his trial.

However, in December, the Supreme Court ruled that Kanu’s trial on terrorism must continue.

Judicial sources, who confirmed the disbandment of the legal team, said Kanu was not happy with the outcome of the case at the Supreme Court and ordered the disbandment of the legal team.

The sources also said another Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kanu Agabi, is to be drafted in as the embattled IPOB leader continues to battle his case in court with the aim of being transferred to Kuje prison, where he will have free access to people as he pleases.

It would be noted that Kanu’s family, in a statement in June 2023, sacked the legal team of the IPOB leader.

In a statement issued by Kanu’s younger brother, Kanunta Kanu and posted on his X handle then entitled “Notice of Dismissal,” it read: “I hereby formally notify @MikeozekhomeSAN and @lfeanyiEjiofor that their services are no longer required in #MaziNnamdiKanu case pending before the Supreme Court of Nigeria and all concerning him.”
