Since 1970, after the civil war (popularly known as the Biafran War), the development and progress of Southeast Nigeria have always been a concern.

For more than five decades, Southeast Nigeria has yet to be healed from the bruises of the civil war. The region has continually experienced developmental setbacks, either as a result of its political disposition to the power that be in the Central government or a lack of regional cohesion/mutual interest.
It is the first time, after this long decades, that Southeast is about to be healed.
It all began with the Peace In South-East Project (PISE-P), an initiative of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, with a focus on the use of non-kinetics means to address the security challenges in the South-East zone. Unveiled on December 29, 2023, PISE-P’s eight pillars include education, agriculture, commerce/industry, infrastructural development, culture and tourism, sports/entertainment, governance/leadership and reconciliation/ rehabilitation/ reintegration. The PISE-P recognizes the urgency to address numerous socio-economic challenges (Rising unemployment, inflation, and security threats that have hindered the region’s potential for growth) restore peace, and unlock the untapped potential within the region.
One cannot help but thank Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu for this initiative, which has been applauded by all.
The passage of the Bill for the establishment of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), by both chambers of National Assembly, was considered by many as one of the best decisions taken by the Nigerian Legislators in recent times. Kudos, again, to Hon Benjamin Kalu, who initiated and facilitated the passage of the bill.
The bill being passed is now awaiting the assenting of the President, to become fully established.
The establishment of SEDC will embody a commitment to uplifting marginalised communities in the South East geopolitical zone. The establishment of the Commission will also foster national cohesion, liberating the region from years of subtle neglect.
Despite its rich cultural heritage and entrepreneurial spirit, the Southeast has faced developmental barriers that have hindered its full potential. The Commission will herald a new era of liberation for South-Eastern Nigeria, empowering its people and unlocking opportunities for growth.
The SEDC will play a pivotal role in catalyzing economic empowerment within the South-East. By investing in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and technology, the commission will stimulate job creation and entrepreneurship. This I believe is key, especially with the PISE-P initiative.
Access to funding, skills development programmes, and market linkages will empower local businesses, driving economic growth and reducing unemployment rates. Through targeted initiatives, the SEDC will harness the region’s untapped potential, positioning it as a hub for innovation and economic prosperity.
Promoting social integration and harmony is also integral to the SEDC’s mission. Through community-based initiatives, the commission will foster dialogue, reconciliation, and understanding among groups in the South-East.
There is no doubt that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to national unity and inclusive development. This will be exemplified through the establishment of the SEDC.
The establishment of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) under his stewardship will stand as a testament to his foresight, compassion, and dedication to fostering national unity and progress.
The SEDC would stand as a shining example of his proactive approach to governance, as it embodies his belief in empowering the marginalised and fostering inclusive development.
Through this bold move, President Tinubu would not have only addressed historical injustices but will also lay the groundwork for a more equitable and prosperous future for all Nigerians.
The Establishment of this Commission will also capture the mind of the Ndigbos, and endeared them to the President. It will become very easier for him to win the confidence, support of the Southeast in his political ambition and leadership.
The SEDC is a leap for Tinubu, and his administration.
