Historically, this region has produced leaders, thinkers, and activists who have shaped not just their local communities but the nation at large. Today, in the face of growing discontent and calls for hunger protests against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is crucial for the youths of Southeast Nigeria to listen to the wise counsel of Ohanaeze and other Igbo leaders and reject these protests.

The call for hunger protests stems from widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of economic issues, unemployment, and poverty. These are legitimate concerns that affect millions of Nigerians, particularly the youth.

The economic challenges have led to frustrations that manifest in various forms of civil unrest, including the planned hunger protests. However, while the frustrations are real, the method of addressing them needs careful consideration. Protests, especially those driven by hunger and desperation, can quickly spiral out of control, leading to violence, the loss of lives, and the destruction of property. The recent history of Nigeria is replete with examples where peaceful protests turned violent, resulting in more harm than good.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has always been a stabilizing force in times of national turmoil. The organization, along with other respected Igbo leaders, has consistently advocated for dialogue, peaceful resolution of conflicts, and constructive engagement with the government. Their stance is not one of complacency but of strategic foresight.

The leadership of Ohanaeze understands the socio-political dynamics of Nigeria and the delicate balance required to navigate the country’s complex issues. They recognize that while protest is a legitimate form of expressing dissent, it must be approached with caution, especially in a volatile socio-economic climate.

For the youths in Southeast Nigeria, joining the hunger protests carries several risks that outweigh the potential benefits.

Historical precedents show that protests in Nigeria can quickly turn violent. The End SARS protests of 2020, which began as a peaceful demonstration against police brutality, ended in chaos and bloodshed. Hunger protests, driven by desperation, are even more prone to violence. Protests often lead to economic disruptions. Businesses close down, daily wage earners lose their income, and the local economy suffers. For a region striving to overcome economic challenges, this is counterproductive.

There is a risk of genuine grievances being hijacked by political opportunists. These individuals might exploit the protests to further their agendas, leading to outcomes that do not benefit the common people. The government has a history of clamping down on protests. Arrests, detentions, and legal battles can follow, putting the youth at risk of criminal records and long-term consequences.

Igbo leaders, through organizations like Ohanaeze, have consistently emphasized the importance of education, entrepreneurship, and constructive dialogue as pathways to empowerment and change. Their advice is rooted in a deep understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape and a commitment to the welfare of the Igbo people. Igbo leaders advocate for engaging with the government through dialogue. By presenting their concerns through organized and strategic channels, the youth can push for sustainable changes without resorting to destructive means.

Instead of participating in protests that disrupt the economy, Igbo leaders encourage youths to focus on entrepreneurship and self-reliance. The Southeast is known for its enterprising spirit, and by building businesses and creating jobs, the youth can address economic challenges more effectively.

The Igbo leadership understands the importance of political participation. By encouraging the youth to engage in politics constructively, they can work towards electing representatives who genuinely understand and advocate for their needs. Protests can create divisions within communities. By rejecting the hunger protests and working together under the guidance of their leaders, the youths can strengthen their community bonds and work towards common goals.

The future of Southeast Nigeria lies in the hands of its youth. By listening to the wisdom of Ohanaeze and other Igbo leaders, they can choose a path that promises sustainable development and long-term prosperity. Investing in education is paramount. The Igbo tradition of valuing education can empower the youth to innovate, create, and lead in various sectors, contributing to the region’s growth.

Embracing their rich cultural heritage and working in unity can help the youth build a strong, cohesive community capable of overcoming challenges. Building alliances within and outside the region can provide the necessary support and resources for development projects and initiatives that benefit the community. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and remain resilient in the face of adversity is a hallmark of the Igbo spirit. By channeling this resilience into positive actions, the youth can overcome current challenges and build a brighter future.

The call for hunger protests is a reflection of deep-seated frustrations, but it is not the solution. By heeding the advice of Ohanaeze and other Igbo leaders, the youths of Southeast Nigeria can avoid the pitfalls of destructive protests and work towards meaningful, sustainable change. Their future depends on making wise choices today, and rejecting the hunger protests in favor of constructive engagement and development is the path to a prosperous tomorrow. In a time of crisis, the strength of a community is tested. For the Southeast youth, this is an opportunity to demonstrate their resilience, wisdom, and commitment to a better future. By standing together under the guidance of their leaders, they can navigate these challenging times and emerge stronger, united, and ready to lead Nigeria towards a brighter future.
