Labour gives Police, Edo govt 14-day ultimatum to quit secretariat
  • December 20, 2024
  • Unity Times

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued the Edo State Government and the Police Force a 14-day notice to quit its secretariat in Benin City.

In a statement signed by the NLC President and General Secretary, Joe Ajaero and Emmanuel Ugboaja, respectively, the 14-day working day ultimatum would expire on January 8, 2025.

The NLC decided to take this step after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Owerri, Imo State, on Thursday.

“The police are to vacate the Secretariat premises, return all confiscated properties to the Congress, and commit to refraining from further interference in trade union activities,” the statement read.

“The group also condemns the actions of the Police and Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State in orchestrating an invasion of the NLC State Secretariat.

“The brazen act of impunity included the ransacking of properties and the unlawful removal of items, all in a bid to impose an illegitimate leadership on the workers.

“Failure to comply will compel the Congress to initiate unprecedented measures in defence of workers and trade union rights.”
