Arochukwu Day, celebrated annually on December 26, stands as a testament to the unity, cultural richness, and enduring heritage of the Arochukwu Kingdom.

This day is not merely a calendar event but a sacred occasion that draws the illustrious sons and daughters of Arochukwu from over 200 colonies across Nigeria and the diaspora back to their ancestral home.

It is a day of homecoming, reflection, and celebration of the ties that bind the people of Arochukwu together. The event, hosted at the Arochukwu Civic Centre, attracts a roll call of notable individuals, including government officials, traditional institutions, and friends of the Kingdom.

The significance of Arochukwu Day lies in its ability to showcase the rich culture of the Aro people, foster unity, and celebrate the achievements of its people who have excelled in various fields. It also serves as an opportunity to highlight the progress and development within the Kingdom, including the birth of international-standard hotels, improved road networks, and enhanced infrastructure, all of which contribute to the betterment of life in Arochukwu.

However, Arochukwu Day is not just about cultural festivities; it is also a platform to recognize excellence. The Kingdom, through its established institutions, honors its distinguished sons and daughters who have made significant contributions to society. These recognitions, such as Ugwu Aro, Ikemba Aro, and Ada Ukwu Aro, are not chieftaincy titles but marks of unique recognition, with Ugwu Aro being the highest honour in Arochukwu Kingdom.

This year, the honour of Ugwu Aro will be conferred upon Barrister Oscar Chukwumah Okoro, a man whose illustrious career and contributions to society make him a fitting recipient of this prestigious award.

Barrister Oscar Chukwumah Okoro: A Life of Service and Excellence

Barrister Oscar Chukwumah Okoro is a distinguished legal practitioner and public servant whose career is marked by unwavering dedication, exceptional competence, and significant contributions to the legal and legislative sectors in Nigeria.

His journey of excellence began at Aggrey Memorial College, Arochukwu, Abia State, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1980. This foundation of academic brilliance set the stage for a lifetime of achievements.

Barrister Okoro pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, graduating with honours in 1992. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1993 and completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1994.

His quest for knowledge led him to further his education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a postgraduate degree in Corporate Law Management and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Public Law. Currently, he is a Ph.D. candidate at the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Administration (CIA). Barrister Okoro’s legal career began with a brief attachment at the Chief Gani Fawehinmi Law Firm in Lagos, followed by a position as a counsel at Otuyemi & Otuyemi Associates. In 1996, he established his private law practice, Oscar C. Okoro & Co. (Grace Chambers), Solicitors and Advocates of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, based in Lagos.

This entrepreneurial endeavour showcased not only his legal acumen but also his commitment to justice and the rule of law. In 1998, Barrister Okoro transitioned to public service as Special Assistant to Chief S. A. Bakare, CEO of Oluwalogbon Motors Ltd, later becoming the Manager of the company’s Victoria Island branch. His journey in legislative affairs began in 2000 when he was appointed Principal Legislative Officer to the Deputy House Leader, Hon. MAO Ohuabunwa, representing the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency. During this time, he played a pivotal role in drafting numerous bills and motions, demonstrating his legislative expertise and dedication to public service.

Barrister Okoro continued to serve in various capacities within the National Assembly, including as Principal Legislative Officer and, subsequently, as Director (Legislative) in the Chamber Department of the House of Representatives. Currently, he serves as the Clerk at the Table of the House of Representatives, Clerk of the House Committee on Finance, and a member of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Committee of the National Assembly. His extensive experience and contributions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legislative landscape.
