2027: Atiku Announces Formation of Opposition Coalition
  • March 21, 2025
  • Unity Times

The former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has announced plans to form a coalition of opposition political parties aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Atiku made this announcement on behalf of opposition leaders during a press conference held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Responding to a question about the coalition, Atiku declared, “Yes, this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027.”

The move signals a significant step toward unifying opposition forces in Nigeria, as political leaders seek to present a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election. Atiku’s announcement comes amid growing political tensions and debates over governance, with opposition figures increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction with the current administration.

The proposed coalition is expected to bring together key political parties and stakeholders, including prominent figures such as Peter Obi of the Labour Party and other opposition leaders. The alliance aims to consolidate resources, strategies, and support bases to mount a strong campaign against President Tinubu’s reelection bid.

This development follows recent criticisms by Atiku and other opposition leaders against the federal government, including their call for the National Assembly to reject Tinubu’s proposed emergency rule in Rivers State, which they described as “political manipulation.”

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the formation of this coalition marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, setting the stage for what could be one of the most fiercely contested presidential races in the nation’s history.
