The former Vice President of Nigeria and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said the arrest and detention of former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is simply because of his membership in the newly created African Democratic Congress.

Atiku, who took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to share his opinion, stated that it is an example of the present administration’s strategy of gagging the voice of the opposition.

The ADC, though established in 2005 the year 2025 saw the party receiving prominent political actors in Nigeria such as Senator David Mark, the party’s interim chairman, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the party’s secretary; and the likes of Nasie El-Rufai, Atiku, and the whispered membership of Peter Obi, among other political heavyweights in Nigeria.

Atiku wrote, “The only reason the @officialEFCC has detained the former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, @AWTambuwal, is because he is a member of the opposition coalition. It is a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration’s agenda to harrass, intimidate, and decimate the opposition.
