President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session, alongside other presidential communications seeking legislative approval for various appointments.

In the correspondence, President Tinubu explained that the nomination was made pursuant to Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and urged the upper chamber to give the request its “usual expeditious consideration.”
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” the President stated in the letter, which also included the nominee’s curriculum vitae for evaluation.
Senate President Akpabio subsequently referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for consideration “as soon as practicable.”
