Court fixes November 20 for judgment in Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled November 20 for the judgment in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date on Friday after Kanu failed to open his defence within the six days granted to him by the court.

The judge ruled that Kanu’s refusal to use the allotted time meant he could not later claim that his right to a fair hearing had been violated.

During the proceedings, Kanu filed a motion challenging the legality of his trial, arguing that terrorism is no longer a recognised offence under Nigerian law. He claimed that the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, under which he was charged, had been repealed.

Kanu insisted that the charges against him had no legal foundation and therefore urged the court to dismiss the case and order his release.
