The National Assembly of Nigeria has cut short its recess and will reconvene plenary on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, amid moves to amend the date of the 2027 presidential election.
Lawmakers are considering shifting the poll from February 20 to February 13, 2027, following concerns that the original date falls within the Ramadan fasting period.
In a notice signed by Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, senators and members of the House of Representatives were directed to resume at 11 a.m., with “very crucial decisions” expected during the session.
Sources within the legislature said the emergency plenary is aimed at providing legislative backing to concerns raised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and religious stakeholders over voter participation.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other Muslim groups had urged a review, noting that February 20, 2027, falls within Ramadan.
