Okpebholo Reacts to Attack on ADC Members in Benin
  • February 25, 2026
  • Unity Times

Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo State, has strongly condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the incident as an internal party conflict that spiraled out of control.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, the governor expressed sympathy for the affected members of the party.

He said it was unfortunate that some individuals allegedly took advantage of Edo’s peaceful atmosphere to foment violence.

The statement stressed, “as peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity.”

Okpebholo added that, as the state’s Chief Security Officer, he would not allow Edo to become a theatre for political confrontation.

“While the precise motive behind this attack remains unclear, I strongly believe its primary aim is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful regions,” he stated.

The governor further maintained that no form of political blackmail would diminish the support Edo people have for their government.

He said politics should be centred on performance, engagement with citizens, and sustained efforts to earn public trust.

“This is the foundation of our reputation, and we are committed to maintaining it,” he added.

Okpebholo also denounced the use of violence by politicians or individuals seeking electoral gain, saying such behaviour reflects a lack of integrity and respect for voters.

He noted that his party welcomes constructive opposition and would not be cowed by blackmail or staged attacks.

While sympathising with ADC members and condemning the violence, he advised the party against making external accusations, suggesting the crisis appeared to stem from internal disagreements.

He also urged Edo residents to remain calm and maintain peace, stressing that the incident must not damage the state’s image. “Edo remains a peaceful state, and that legacy must be preserved,” he affirmed.

In a caution to opposition parties, the governor said political groups should settle internal disputes before holding public events.

“Any attempt to incite violence under the pretext of political activity would be firmly addressed,” he warned.

He finally called on the police and other security agencies to stay alert and closely monitor political gatherings to prevent further escalation, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
