The African Union has called for increased international support for Nigeria following the deadly March 16 suicide bombings in Maiduguri.

In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf condemned the attacks, which left several people dead and many others injured, describing them as a grave violation of human rights and a threat to regional stability.
The AU expressed solidarity with Nigeria and extended condolences to victims’ families, while commending the efforts of the Federal Government and Borno State authorities in tackling terrorism.
However, Youssouf stressed that the incident highlights the persistent danger posed by extremist groups, urging the global community to step up support through intelligence sharing, humanitarian aid, and development initiatives across the Lake Chad region.
He noted that only sustained cooperation and collective action can effectively defeat terrorism and restore lasting peace.
