Ukraine’s struggle has shown that even in the middle of crisis, a people can discover resources within themselves that change not only their own future, but the future of the world around them.

It echoes through history, including in the story of the Biafrans during the Nigerian Civil War, a period that remains one of the most painful yet remarkable chapters in African history. In both cases, hardship forced people to look inward, and what they found there surprised the world.
When Ukraine was invaded in 2022, many analysts predicted a quick collapse. The country faced a larger military, constant attacks, and economic pressure that would have overwhelmed most nations. Yet instead of surrendering to circumstances, Ukrainians adapted. The constant drone attacks that once threatened to paralyze the country became the very reason Ukraine developed some of the most effective counter-drone systems in the world. What began as a desperate attempt to survive turned into expertise that other nations now seek to learn from. Countries facing similar threats have asked Ukraine for guidance, proving that a nation under pressure can still become a source of strength for others.

The same pattern appeared decades earlier during the Nigerian Civil War. The Biafran people, cut off from supplies and surrounded by conflict, faced conditions that would have broken many societies. Food was scarce, medicine was limited, and the future looked uncertain. Yet in the middle of that crisis, something extraordinary happened.
With almost no resources, Biafran scientists and engineers built tools, machines, and technologies that few believed possible under such conditions.
