Opposition Moves Toward Single Candidate Strategy for 2027 Presidential Election

Nigeria’s opposition parties are closing ranks ahead of the 2027 elections, unveiling plans to field a unified presidential candidate in a strategic bid to challenge the ruling party.

The resolution emerged from a high-level summit in Ibadan, bringing together leaders of the African Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party.
In a joint communiqué, the parties pledged to resist what they described as attempts by the All Progressives Congress to dominate Nigeria’s political space, warning against the emergence of a one-party system.

They also raised concerns about the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, alleging bias and calling for reforms to strengthen electoral integrity.

The proposed single-candidate strategy marks a significant shift toward coalition politics, reflecting lessons from previous elections where fragmented opposition weakened their chances.
With primaries approaching and political tensions rising, the success of this strategy may hinge on the ability of diverse parties to set aside differences and rally behind a common vision.
