Makinde Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition

Anietie Udobit, Abuja

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under a newly forged alliance involving the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), setting the stage for what analysts describe as an increasingly competitive political season.

Makinde’s declaration is expected to reshape political conversations within opposition circles, especially as coalition talks and strategic realignments continue ahead of the next general election.

Speaking during consultations with supporters and political stakeholders, the governor reportedly emphasised the need for “competent leadership, economic stability and national unity,” while positioning himself as part of a new generation of political leadership.

Political observers say Makinde’s entry into the race could significantly influence voting calculations in the South-West and among younger voters seeking alternatives outside the traditional political blocs.

The announcement also comes amid growing speculation about potential alliances among opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Analysts believe the emergence of new coalitions reflects increasing dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s political structure and a renewed push for broader political alternatives.
