Civic Groups Plan Nationwide June 12 Demonstrations

As Nigeria prepares to commemorate Democracy Day, several civil society organizations and activist networks have announced plans for coordinated protests across major cities including Lagos, Abuja, and parts of Jigawa State.

Among the leading groups driving the mobilisation is the Take-It-Back Movement, which says the demonstrations are intended to draw attention to rising insecurity, economic hardship, and governance concerns.

Organizers insist the gatherings will remain peaceful and constitutional, emphasizing citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

Security agencies have pledged to maintain law and order while respecting lawful civic activities.

The planned demonstrations are expected to test the relationship between government authorities and civil society groups at a time of heightened political sensitivity ahead of the 2027 elections.
