International health agencies have warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo may not yet have reached its peak.
The World Health Organization and humanitarian partners report more than 800 confirmed and suspected cases, with fatalities approaching 200. Health workers fear that conflict, displacement, and limited healthcare access could accelerate transmission in affected communities.
The warning comes despite ongoing containment efforts involving surveillance, contact tracing, treatment centers, and public awareness campaigns.
For African nations, including Nigeria, the outbreak serves as a reminder that infectious diseases remain one of the continent’s most serious security threats.
Health experts continue to emphasize preparedness, border surveillance, and rapid response capabilities as essential tools for preventing cross-border transmission.
The lessons from previous outbreaks—including Nigeria’s successful containment of Ebola in 2014—remain highly relevant as regional governments intensify vigilance.
