Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa have come under renewed strain following Nigeria’s formal demand for decisive action over the reported deaths of 98 Nigerian citizens in incidents linked to xenophobic violence and criminal attacks in South Africa.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has urged South African authorities to ensure thorough investigations, prosecute perpetrators, and strengthen protections for foreign nationals, particularly members of the Nigerian community who have repeatedly raised concerns over targeted attacks.
The latest diplomatic protest comes against the backdrop of years of periodic anti-migrant violence in South Africa, where foreign-owned businesses have been looted, properties destroyed, and dozens of African migrants killed or injured during outbreaks of xenophobic unrest.
Renewed Calls for Protection
Nigerian officials stressed that while both countries maintain strong diplomatic, economic, and historical ties dating back to Nigeria’s support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, the continued loss of Nigerian lives remains unacceptable.
Community organizations representing Nigerians in South Africa have also called for stronger bilateral mechanisms to protect migrants, improve policing, and facilitate justice for victims.
Economic and Diplomatic Implications
South Africa remains one of Nigeria’s largest investment destinations on the continent, while thousands of Nigerians live, study, and conduct business there.
Analysts warn that recurring xenophobic incidents threaten not only diplomatic relations but also the goals of African integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which depends heavily on the free movement of people, skills, and investment across borders.
Security experts have urged both governments to strengthen intelligence sharing, community policing, and early-warning mechanisms to prevent future attacks.
