2027: Opposition Leaders Reopen Coalition Talks as Nigeria’s Political Chessboard Shifts

ABUJA — With the 2027 presidential election moving from a distant political conversation into an increasingly organised contest, leading opposition figures are intensifying consultations over the possibility of presenting a united challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, NDC Party Candidate Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other opposition stakeholders have been involved in a series of meetings and consultations aimed at overcoming one of the opposition’s most persistent weaknesses: fragmentation.

The consultations are not entirely new. In April, Atiku, Obi, Makinde, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and other political leaders converged in Ibadan for a major opposition summit hosted by Makinde. The gathering brought together figures from different political traditions and underscored the growing recognition that an opposition victory in 2027 may depend less on individual popularity and more on the ability to build a broad electoral coalition.

Makinde subsequently formally declared his presidential ambition under a PDP/APM alliance, explicitly arguing that opposition parties must work together to provide an alternative to the ruling party.

But coalition politics in Nigeria has never been straightforward.

The central question is not simply whether Atiku, Obi, Makinde and others can sit around the same table. It is whether they can agree on who leads, who steps aside, which party carries the ticket, how regional interests are balanced and how the eventual candidate can translate elite agreements into votes at ward level.

For Nigerian voters, this distinction matters.

Previous attempts at opposition alliances have frequently collapsed over presidential ambition, zoning, party structures and disagreements over who should control the machinery of the proposed coalition.

The 2027 contest could therefore become a referendum not only on the Tinubu administration but also on whether Nigeria’s opposition can demonstrate that it has moved beyond personality politics and developed a credible governing alternative.

The coming months are likely to reveal whether the current consultations produce a genuine electoral alliance—or merely another round of political meetings ahead of another fragmented presidential contest.
