Governor-elect calls for healing after a bitter contest, pledges support for families who lost loved ones, property and livelihoods

OSOGBO — Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has moved to shift the conversation from electoral victory to reconciliation after receiving his Certificate of Return following his re-election, announcing a ₦500 million Election Violence Victims Endowment Fund for people affected by violence surrounding the poll.

Adeleke’s post-election intervention comes as the state attempts to move beyond a fiercely contested campaign marked by accusations, political tension and reports of violence.

At the presentation ceremony, the governor described the certificate not simply as recognition of his victory but as a renewed mandate from the people of Osun.

He also acknowledged the human cost of the election, saying citizens were injured, property and livelihoods destroyed and lives lost. According to his remarks, the Adeleke family, through the Springtime Development Foundation, will provide scholarships through university level for children and dependants of people killed in the violence.

₦500m beyond politics

The proposed endowment fund is particularly significant because Adeleke said it would be administered as a humanitarian intervention rather than a partisan programme.

A verification and relief committee chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, is expected to identify verified victims and oversee distribution.

The governor specifically said eligibility would not depend on political affiliation, religion, ethnicity, gender or social status.

That approach could prove important in a state where political competition has frequently extended beyond the ballot box into deep community divisions.

The governor has previously accused political opponents of promoting violence ahead of the election, allegations that were rejected by his opponents.

From victory to responsibility

Adeleke’s message after the election was therefore noticeably different from the rhetoric of the campaign.

“The election is over. The campaign is over. The contest is over,” was the thrust of his message, as he called for the state to unite around governance.

For Osun, the challenge now is whether the political temperature can genuinely fall.

The election was not merely a contest between political parties. It became a test of the state’s institutions, security architecture and capacity to manage intense political competition without allowing communities to become victims.

The ₦500 million fund could consequently become more than financial assistance. Properly administered, it could form part of a broader post-election healing process.

The bigger test

The immediate question will be how quickly the verification process begins, who qualifies and how transparent the disbursement will be.

For families who lost breadwinners, children who lost parents and businesses affected by political violence, the value of the initiative will ultimately be measured not by the announcement but by what reaches them.

For the governor, meanwhile, the certificate marks the beginning of a more difficult phase: turning an electoral mandate into an inclusive government.
