UK Warns Citizens Over Travel To Parts Of Nigeria As Kidnapping Threat Deepens

British advisory highlights terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across North, Central and parts of southern Nigeria

ABUJA/LONDON — The United Kingdom has issued extensive security warnings covering large parts of Nigeria, reflecting growing international concern over terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and communal violence.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises British nationals against all travel to several Nigerian states and against all but essential travel to others.

The areas under the strongest warning include Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe, as well as Katsina and Zamfara.

The UK also advises against all but essential travel to several other states, including Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto, as well as parts of the North-Central region.

Kidnapping remains central concern

The FCDO describes kidnapping as widespread and warns that criminal kidnappings can occur across Nigeria.

The advisory highlights particularly severe risks in the north-west and parts of central Nigeria, while also pointing to kidnapping risks in the Niger Delta and along major highways.

The British government specifically warns that terrorist groups and criminal networks may target foreigners and Nigerians with perceived access to funds.

For Nigeria, this is more than a diplomatic advisory. It is an international reflection of a domestic security crisis.

What it means for Nigeria

Travel advisories can have economic consequences.

When international governments warn their citizens against travelling to certain areas, businesses reconsider investments, humanitarian organisations review operations, tourists change plans and insurance costs can rise.

But there is another dimension. For millions of Nigerians, the danger identified in the advisory is not theoretical. It is the reality of travelling to a farm, attending school, commuting on a highway or returning home after dark.

The FCDO says terrorist threats exist, particularly in the North-East, while kidnapping and violent attacks have also occurred in several other regions.

The challenge for Abuja

Nigeria’s response cannot simply be about reassuring foreign governments.

The real test is whether Nigerians themselves can safely travel from one state to another. Security is ultimately measured not by the number of military operations announced, but by whether farmers can farm, children can attend school, traders can travel and families can sleep without fear.
