2027: Wike’s Rainbow Coalition Collides With APC Governors As Opposition Forces Reorganise

By Unity Times Political Desk

Nigeria’s political landscape is beginning to show the first major fault lines of the 2027 presidential contest, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), opposition forces and emerging political coalitions increasingly engaged in competing efforts to consolidate power.

At the centre of one of the latest disputes is the Rainbow Coalition associated with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

The coalition has presented itself as a broad political arrangement supporting President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. But its emergence has exposed tensions between Wike and a number of APC governors who insist that the party’s official structure must remain the principal vehicle for the President’s campaign.

APC governors draw the line

The Progressive Governors Forum, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, recently declared that APC governors would not participate in or endorse political arrangements capable of weakening the APC or undermining Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

The governors said they would remain committed to APC candidates and structures ahead of the 2027 elections.

The position is significant because governors constitute some of the most influential political actors in Nigeria’s electoral system. Their control of state-level political structures, grassroots mobilisation networks and party machinery gives them considerable influence over how presidential campaigns are organised.

Wike fires back

Wike has rejected the interpretation that his coalition represents an attempt to undermine the APC.

He has said the Rainbow Coalition is focused on supporting Tinubu’s second-term bid and is not formally affiliated with the APC.

In subsequent comments, Wike accused some APC governors of opposing the coalition for reasons connected to political influence and the future control of the National Assembly leadership.

He has also argued that President Tinubu is aware of his political activities.

The disagreement therefore raises a delicate question for the ruling party: can a broad pro-Tinubu coalition operate outside the formal APC structure without creating competing centres of political authority?

That question is likely to become more consequential as campaign structures take shape.
