The Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment process against the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.

The 26 members of the assembly in the document signed and dated March 14, 2025, and addressed to the Speaker through the Clerk of the House indicated that they have found Governor Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, guilty of gross misconduct.

The lawmakers, in a notice titled, “Titled: Notice of Gross Misconduct Pursuant To Section Section 188 of the Federal Republic of Nigerian Constitution (As Amended) 1999. Re: Acts of Misconduct in the Performance of the Office of the Governor By His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, listed reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds contrary to sections 120, 121 (1) (2) and 122 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

“Mr. Speaker, we conclude by saying that the Governor has shown that he is not prepared to govern the state in line with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

“The Supreme Court in Suit No. SC/CV/1174/2024 condemned his action when it stated  “the 8th respondent’s fear of impeachment by the House of Assembly is not a justification for his attacks on the House of Assembly, the constitution, the Government of Rivers State, and the rule of Political disengagement cannot justify these attacks and contempt for the rule of law by the Governor of a state or any person. What the 8th respondent has done was to destroy the government because of the fear of impeachment,” the members stated as the reason for their action.

They also served a similar letter of notice on the Deputy Governor of the state, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
