Political undercurrents ahead of the 2027 elections deepened on Thursday as Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, hosted Peter Obi and a delegation of South-East leaders in a meeting widely seen as part of emerging opposition alliances.

Describing himself as a “freelance politician,” Mohammed signaled a fluid political stance amid ongoing instability within the Peoples Democratic Party.

The closed-door meeting at the Government House in Bauchi focused on partnership, cooperation, and what both leaders described as a broader mission to “rebuild” Nigeria and restore political balance.

Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, stressed the urgency of national unity and reform, warning that the country is “headed in the wrong direction” and must urgently recalibrate its path.

The visit is the latest in a series of strategic engagements by Mohammed, who has recently hosted figures across party lines—including members of the African Democratic Congress and the All Progressives Congress—fueling speculation about a major political realignment.
