The World Health Organization and South African health authorities are closely monitoring 97 possible contacts linked to a hantavirus outbreak associated with a cruise ship evacuation.

Health officials confirmed that passengers evacuated from the vessel to Spain and the Netherlands have largely tested negative, although surveillance remains active.

Authorities say strict monitoring measures are being enforced to prevent possible international spread.

The outbreak has heightened global concerns over infectious disease preparedness and international travel safety.
