The Federal Government has finalized arrangements for the evacuation of more than 1,000 Nigerians willing to return home from South Africa amid growing fears of xenophobic violence.

Officials confirmed that five evacuation flights have been cleared after comprehensive screening and documentation exercises involving Nigerian diplomatic missions and South African authorities.

The decision follows increasing reports of tension in several South African communities where foreign nationals have expressed concerns over safety amid anti-immigrant sentiments.

South Africa has experienced periodic outbreaks of xenophobic violence over the past two decades, often fueled by economic hardship, unemployment, and competition over scarce opportunities.

Nigerians constitute one of the largest African migrant communities in South Africa, contributing significantly to sectors including education, healthcare, business, and technology.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the evacuation remains voluntary and is designed to protect citizens who no longer feel safe.

Analysts note that recurring xenophobic incidents continue to test diplomatic relations between Africa’s two largest economies.

Many observers believe the crisis highlights broader continental questions about migration, economic inclusion, youth unemployment, and the unfinished project of African integration.

For affected families, however, the issue is more immediate: safety, security, and the hope of returning home with dignity.
