Across markets in Nigeria, food inflation continues to squeeze households, with the price of tomatoes reaching as high as ₦125,000 per basket in some locations.

The sharp increase has become a symbol of the broader cost-of-living crisis confronting millions of families.

Livestock prices have also surged dramatically, raising concerns ahead of festive and social events that traditionally drive food demand.

Traders blame rising transportation costs, insecurity affecting farming communities, fluctuating fuel prices, climate-related disruptions, and supply chain challenges.

Consumers, meanwhile, are struggling to cope.

Many households report reducing meal portions, changing dietary habits, and eliminating previously affordable food items from family menus.

Economists warn that persistent food inflation poses risks not only to household welfare but also to broader economic stability.

Agricultural experts have repeatedly called for investments in rural security, storage infrastructure, irrigation systems, and transportation networks to stabilize food supply. Until those structural challenges are addressed, many fear food prices may remain elevated, placing additional pressure on already stretched family incomes.
