The appointment, which runs from May 19, 2026, to December 31, 2028, places the respected academic among a distinguished network of international scholars working to advance cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and global academic partnerships.
The fellowship was conveyed in an official letter signed by the Vice-Chancellor of INTI International University, Professor Joseph Lee, who described the appointment as part of the university’s commitment to promoting research excellence, strengthening international scholarly engagement, and fostering knowledge exchange across institutions and continents.
As a Research Fellow, Dr. Duru will participate in several high-impact academic activities, including collaborative international research projects, postgraduate supervision, guest lectures, curriculum development, research consultancy, scholarly publications, international conferences, and research symposiums.
The fellowship also provides opportunities to access international research funding, build global academic partnerships, and contribute to policy-relevant studies addressing contemporary communication and development challenges.
The appointment further reinforces the growing recognition of Nigerian academics whose research continues to shape global conversations on governance, communication, public policy, and sustainable development.
Dr. Duru currently serves as the Head of the Department of Mass Communication at Achievers University, Owo, where he combines academic leadership with more than two decades of professional experience spanning academia, government, humanitarian services, international development, public affairs, media management, and strategic communication.
Widely respected as both a scholar and practitioner, he has built an impressive career at the intersection of communication research and public policy, helping governments, development partners, and international organizations improve governance, transparency, and citizen engagement.
Before returning fully to academia, he served as a Communication Expert with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Nigeria, where he contributed to humanitarian communication strategies and crisis-response initiatives.
Earlier, he led communications for the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) Project, a landmark national identity programme supported by the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the French Development Agency, helping to promote inclusive digital identity systems across Nigeria.
Beyond humanitarian work, Dr. Duru has played significant roles in some of Nigeria’s most notable governance reform programmes.
He served as Lead Communication and Advocacy Consultant on the European Union-funded Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) Programme and the Justice for All (J4A) Programme, supported by the former UK Department for International Development (DFID).
Through these initiatives, he contributed to justice-sector reforms, implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, anti-corruption advocacy, institutional capacity building, and greater citizen participation in governance.
He also served as Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Governor of Imo State, where he led strategic government communication and public engagement initiatives aimed at strengthening public trust and improving information management.
Dr. Duru is equally recognised as one of the pioneers of Nigeria’s Open Government Partnership (OGP) process. As Co-Chair of the Access to Information Working Group, he helped shape national transparency and accountability reforms that continue to influence public sector governance.
Dr. Duru’s academic journey reflects years of excellence in teaching, research, and institutional leadership.
Before joining Achievers University, he taught at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, Prime University, Abuja, and Madonna University, mentoring generations of students in journalism, public relations, development communication, advertising, and media studies.
His scholarly output includes numerous textbooks, book chapters, conference papers, and more than fifty peer-reviewed journal articles, making him one of Nigeria’s leading voices in communication scholarship.
His research interests span strategic communication, public relations, journalism, development communication, governance, political communication, advertising, African communication systems, and media studies.
Dr. Duru’s appointment at INTI International University is the latest in a series of recognitions acknowledging his contributions to communication practice and academic excellence.
In 2015, he was named among Nigeria’s leading media executives after emerging within the top four percent of professionals screened nationwide. The recognition culminated in an Award of Excellence presented by a business research and publishing organization led by Harvard-trained executive Elvis Krivokuca.
Over the years, he has become a trusted consultant to governments, international development agencies, civil society organisations, and multilateral institutions on communication strategy, institutional reform, stakeholder engagement, governance, and policy advocacy.
Speaking on his appointment, Dr. Duru described the fellowship as both an honour and an opportunity to contribute to global scholarship.
“This fellowship provides an excellent platform for international academic collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and knowledge exchange. I look forward to working with colleagues at INTI International University to produce impactful research that contributes to communication scholarship and sustainable development.”
Colleagues, academics, and development professionals have welcomed the appointment, describing it as a fitting recognition of Dr. Duru’s longstanding contributions to scholarship, governance reform, strategic communication, and public policy across Africa.
Observers say the fellowship also enhances the international visibility of Achievers University, Owo, demonstrating the institution’s growing contribution to global research and innovation.
