A wave of relief swept through Nigeria’s legal community after Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court regained his freedom following nearly a week in captivity.

The judge had been abducted during a midnight attack by armed gunmen, triggering nationwide concern over the growing insecurity affecting judicial officers and public officials.

Authorities have not disclosed details surrounding his release, while security agencies continue investigations aimed at apprehending those responsible.

Military Reports Major Gains

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced that Nigerian troops neutralised more than 100 terrorists during July through coordinated land and air operations conducted across the North-East and North-West.

Military spokespersons said the operations also led to the destruction of terrorist camps, recovery of sophisticated weapons, rescue of kidnapped victims, and the arrest of several suspected collaborators.

The military attributed the successes to improved intelligence gathering, enhanced inter-agency cooperation, and sustained pressure on insurgent groups.

Security Challenges Persist

Despite these operational gains, security experts caution that insurgent and bandit groups continue to adapt their tactics, including kidnappings, improvised explosive devices, and attacks on isolated rural communities.

The Nigerian Bar Association has reiterated calls for enhanced security protection for judges and other judicial personnel, warning that attacks on members of the judiciary undermine confidence in the rule of law.

Analysts say sustained investment in intelligence capabilities, surveillance technology, and community policing will remain essential to consolidating military gains.
