ABUJA — A fresh twist has emerged in the prolonged political and legal battle involving the Osun State Government after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly directed the lifting of restrictions placed on the state’s financial accounts, bringing temporary relief to the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The development follows months of controversy over the freezing of government accounts amid investigations into financial transactions and political allegations that intensified the rivalry between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State.
Governor Adeleke’s administration had earlier approached the courts, describing the account restrictions as unconstitutional and politically motivated. The state government also demanded ₦2 billion in damages, arguing that the freeze disrupted governance, delayed salaries and affected critical development projects.
Political observers say the decision could help reduce tensions in the state ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections. However, analysts believe the legal contest surrounding federal oversight powers and anti-corruption investigations may continue despite the directive.
Constitutional lawyers note that although anti-corruption agencies possess investigative powers, courts have consistently insisted that such powers must be exercised within constitutional safeguards and judicial oversight.
The episode also raises broader questions about the balance between anti-corruption enforcement and democratic governance, especially where elected state governments are involved.
