RABAT — Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a painful setback at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s immediate route to the WAFCON semi-finals and denied the nine-time champions an automatic qualification place for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

But Nigeria’s World Cup dream is not over.

The tournament’s qualification structure provides another opportunity for the quarter-final losers through play-off matches. Nigeria is scheduled to face South Africa, with the winner keeping its World Cup qualification campaign alive.

That distinction is crucial.

Nigeria entered the tournament as defending champions after winning a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in 2025.

The 2026 tournament itself has undergone significant changes, expanding to 16 teams and being postponed from its original March-April dates to July-August.

The Cameroon defeat will therefore be remembered as a major disappointment, but not necessarily the end of Nigeria’s international campaign.

The Falcons now face a different kind of pressure: one match in which the prize is not another African title, but survival in the race for the next Women’s World Cup.

For a country that has historically dominated African women’s football, the encounter with South Africa could become one of the most consequential matches of the tournament.
