Despite the Central Bank warnings and threats to sanction erring commercial banks, most of the banks’ in Abuja and other parts of the country are still giving customers the old notes.
Although few banks visited by our correspondents in Abuja have started giving the new notes, the majority were still giving the old naira notes which are due to be phased out by the CBN in few days’ time.
Also, our correspondents noted that several Point of Sale, POS operators were still paying their customers with the old notes as of Friday 27th January. According to them, Banks are still limiting the number of new notes they give to them.
There are long queues at the Automated Teller Machine Centres dispensing the new Naira notes, as Nigerians fight to get the new notes ahead the CBN deadline.
With these developments, it’s not yet clear if the Apex bank 31st January deadline is still sacrosanct, although the Bank has said, there is no going back on the decision.
