Accenture reports that 63 per cent of CEOs pointed out difficulty in measuring environmental, social and corporate governance data across the value chain as a major obstacle to achieving sustainability.

SSIP is designed to educate and equip suppliers of large companies to achieve sustainability knowledge growth and incorporate sustainability into their business operations. By focusing on supplier sustainability training, the supply chain of large companies can become exponentially more sustainable, thereby achieving global impact.

With the partnership, UNGC will work with Dangote to drive sustainability by design across its SMEs supply chain using incentives, ecosystem network and learning capacity development. For the duration of the programme, participating small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will be presented unique insights into the different topics of business sustainability such as Business Sustainability, Sustainability Financing, Gender and Climate among other concepts, and be empowered to align their sustainability work with global sustainability action and commitments.

“The Sustainability Supplier Impact Programme uniquely positions enterprises to collaborate with their major company customers to take collaborative action on sustainability goals and benefit through peer-to-peer collaboration,” said executive director, UNGC Nigeria, Naomi Nwokolo.

For Dangote Group, no single organisation can drive the SDG agenda in isolation. “As company ambassador for SSIP in Nigeria, this programme aligns with our commitment to the applicable UN SDGs in mainstreaming sustainability via our seven Sustainability pillars, whilst embracing a critical subset by upskilling the SMEs in our supply chain.”

Nigeria alongside India, Kenya and Mexico are among the nations where the pilot phase of the SSIP is implemented.
