Cleric urges NASS On laws for Conclusion Of Election Cases Before Inauguration
  • June 29, 2023
  • Unity Times

Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Anglican Communion, His Grace Professor Emmanuel Chukwuma   has urged members of the National Assembly to amend laws to fast-track dispensation of all elections petitions before the swearing in of winners.

He gave the advice during a press briefing on the 3rd session of the 16th synod of the Enugu Dioceses coming up from 29th June 2023 which will end on July 2nd 2023.

He said the theme of the synod which is “ Continue in the  Faith “ was occasioned by the challenges that Christians are facing , adding that the theme was chosen to encourage Christians to continue in the faith despite  the challenges and their expectations.

Chukwuma suggested that retired judges should be in charge of tribunals, adding that the   judges should be incorruptible judges who will deliver judgments without fear or favour.

He expressed disappointment that despite the assurance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it will conduct credible elections in 2023, the electoral body failed to fulfill its assurance in some areas.

The eminent cleric, however, suggested that INEC should be strengthened and made to be independent especially from the executive arm of government to enable it carry out its functions creditably without being influenced by anybody.

He said though the presidential election recorded irregularities, the President Ahmed Tinubu led administration should take steps to revamp the ailing economy of Nigeria and make agriculture a priority.

The cleric described the administration of Muhammadu Buhari as  the most corrupt  and worst in the history of the country and urged Tinubu to take  steps to address hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy, which he said was a bad start for the current president.

“We call on President Tinubu to probe the past minister of humanitarian affairs, the minister of aviation and minister of transport, the Buhari government was the most corrupt and worst administration,” he stated.
