Unilorin Teaching Hospital to Enjoy 20-Hour Power Supply
  • July 6, 2023

The management of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has concluded arrangement with the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) for a dedicated power line that will guarantee an uninterrupted power supply to the facility for 20 hours.

The 20 hours electricity supply to UITH will commence fully by next week.

The head of corporate affairs unit of the hospital, Mrs Elizabeth Ajiboye, who confirmed the development  said:” This will boost power supply to the mortuary, theatre, wards, units and other critical areas of the hospital. This strategic arrangement was reached as a basement for alternative power supplies like; solar and generating plants to the health institution. The fact that the mortuary wing of the hospital is on 24-hour services lend credence to the point being made on virile alternatives to electricity supply,” Ajiboye said. Ajiboye dismissed claims from certain quarters that the hospital is in total darkness.

She added, ” It is a widely acknowledged fact that the erratic power supply as a result of the collapse of our national grid has not only affected services in the hospital but the country as a whole.

“Consequently, the management of the hospital led by the chief medical director, Prof Abdullahi Yusuf has been frantically working to ensure that activities of the hospital are not grounded as a result of this challenge.

“As an alternative to the erratic municipal power supply, the management has continuously been running on 10,000 litres of diesel to power all the electricity generating plants in the hospital which has significantly improved the electricity challenge at all service points in the hospital.

“With improvement in electricity distribution, supply of water has gradually improved with the effective use of over 15 boreholes dug at strategic locations of the hospital with the hospital water tankers that offload water into the available water reservoirs serving as a backup to ensure services are not halted as a result of insufficient water supply.

“Rather than seeing the UITH as going down the drain, I want to say that the medical institution is waxing stronger by the day. This was attested to by the recent publication where UITH was ranked amongst the top 15 accredited healthcare institutions in Nigeria (2023).”
