The sum of $100 million has been earmarked by the World Bank to be disbursed to seven states of Nigeria for the Sustainable Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) project this year.

The benefiting states of Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Imo, Delta, Ekiti and Gombe are expected to receive their share of the funds based on their performance and records of commitment to the implementation of the project.

The SURWASH programme national coordinator, Abdulhamid Gwaram, who was in Katsina State yesterday said the states will benefit from the amount earmarked, adding that his visit was to discuss the best way for the implementation of the project which started in 2021.

He explained that the delegation he led to the state is expected to guide and direct the four implementation agencies of the state to harness the proper record in the implementation process to ensure the state gets its share of the fund.

“We are only at disbursement of not more than 3 per cent out of the $640 million. We have been given a target by the World Bank of getting about a disbursement of $100 million this year, and we are now asking the states out of the $100 million we aspired, how much will they be able to generate or take out of it.

“Knowing that the funds are only allocated as much as you can withdraw, you are free and permitted to do that, what we are interested in is as much as the beneficiaries are covered to attract the disbursement”, he said

The permanent secretary, state Ministry of Water Resources, Aminu Tukur, thanked the delegation for visiting the state, urging them to assist in advising the state implementation committee to ensure the success of the project in the state.
