  • November 16, 2023

Uchechkwu Okoroafor, Abuja

The recent gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo states have unfolded against a backdrop of disconcerting democratic violations. The electoral process, which should be a celebration of civic duty and a manifestation of the people’s will, has been marred by reprehensible acts of ballot snatching, alleged rewriting of election results, violence, and a dishearteningly low voter turnout.

This editorial unequivocally condemns this assault on Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing the urgent need for corrective action to protect the integrity of the nation’s electoral system.

One of the most glaring and reprehensible violations witnessed during these gubernatorial elections is the rampant act of ballot snatching. This criminal behavior strikes at the heart of the electoral process, robbing citizens of their fundamental right to choose their leaders freely. Ballot snatching not only disenfranchises voters but also undermines the legitimacy of the entire electoral exercise, tarnishing the democratic ideals that Nigeria aspires to uphold.

Ballot snatching directly undermines the people’s right to vote. When ballot boxes are forcefully seized or destroyed, the voices of citizens are silenced, and their democratic agency is subverted. The brazen act of ballot snatching erodes the legitimacy of election outcomes. Leaders who emerge from elections tainted by such malpractices lack the moral authority and public trust required to govern effectively.

Reports of the alleged rewriting of election results further deepen the crisis of confidence in the electoral process. The rewriting of results not only distorts the true reflection of the people’s will but also casts a shadow over the transparency and credibility of the entire electoral system. The rewriting of election results is a direct assault on democratic principles. It undermines the sanctity of the ballot and replaces the genuine expression of the people’s choice with a fabricated narrative, perpetuating an illusion of democracy. A fair and transparent electoral process is essential for building and maintaining trust among citizens. The alleged rewriting of results erodes this trust, fostering skepticism and disillusionment among the electorate.

The specter of violence that loomed over these elections undoubtedly contributed to a palpable sense of fear and insecurity among voters. This, coupled with the low voter turnout, paints a grim picture of an electoral process held hostage by the threat of physical harm. Violence during elections intimidates voters and disrupts the peaceful exercise of their democratic rights. Citizens should not have to navigate a hostile environment to cast their votes, and the prevalence of violence creates a chilling effect on political participation. Low voter turnout is not only a symptom of fear but also a manifestation of a growing disillusionment with the electoral process. When citizens feel that their votes may not make a difference due to violence and malpractice, they are less likely to engage in the democratic process.

The violation of democratic principles through ballot snatching, alleged rewriting of election results, violence, and low voter turnout strikes at the very core of the nation’s democratic ideals. To restore faith in Nigeria’s electoral system, there must be swift and impartial investigations into the reported incidents of ballot snatching, result rewriting, and violence. The electoral process must be transparent and fair to ensure that the will of the people prevails. Safeguarding the integrity of elections requires a commitment to open and accountable procedures that prioritize the voice of the electorate.

The government and electoral authorities must prioritize the safety and security of voters. Adequate measures should be put in place to deter violence, and law enforcement agencies should act swiftly to apprehend those who engage in criminal activities. Civic education initiatives are crucial to enlightening citizens about their rights, the importance of voting, and the significance of actively participating in the democratic process. An informed electorate is better equipped to resist intimidation and manipulation. There must be a demonstrated political will to institute comprehensive electoral reforms. These reforms should address the weaknesses in the current electoral system and fortify it against manipulation and malpractice.

The recent gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo states have exposed critical flaws in Nigeria’s democratic machinery. The nation stands at a crossroads, where the choices made in the aftermath of these elections will shape the trajectory of its democracy. Condemning the rape of Nigeria’s democracy is not just a moral imperative; it is a collective duty to safeguard the principles of justice, fairness, and accountability that underpin a vibrant and thriving democratic society. The journey towards a resilient democracy demands collective action from citizens, civil society organizations, and the government. The restoration of faith in Nigeria’s electoral system is essential for fostering a democratic culture that truly reflects the will of the people. The choice is clear: protect the pillars of democracy or risk the continued erosion of the nation’s democratic ideals. The responsibility lies with all Nigerians to choose the path that ensures a future where democracy flourishes and citizens are free to exercise their fundamental rights without fear or manipulation.

Vote-buying distorts the genuine expression of the people’s will. Instead of voters making informed choices based on the candidates’ qualifications and manifestos, the electoral process becomes tainted by financial transactions, which substitute for true democratic decision-making. At the core of a healthy democracy is the principle of free and fair elections. When votes are bought and sold, this principle is compromised, leading to a democratic erosion that weakens the nation’s political foundation. Vote-buying fosters a culture of corruption within the political sphere. It normalizes the exchange of money for votes, perpetuating a cycle where electoral success is measured not by competence or vision but by financial transactions.  Elected leaders who ascend to power through vote-buying are less likely to be accountable to the electorate. The loyalty of such leaders may lie with those who financed their campaigns rather than the citizens they are meant to represent. When votes are bought, competent leaders with innovative ideas and a genuine commitment to public service may be overshadowed by those with deeper pockets. This stifles the emergence of visionary leaders who can drive positive change.

The recent governorship elections in Imo State, Bayelsa State, and Kogi State have once again brought to the forefront the insidious practice of vote-buying. This phenomenon, which has become an all-too-common feature of Nigerian elections, represents a clear and present danger to the very foundations of the nation’s democracy. Vote buying is a corrupt electoral practice where candidates or their agents offer inducements, typically in the form of cash or material goods, to voters in exchange for their votes. It undermines the principles of free and fair elections, compromises the integrity of the democratic process, and erodes the legitimacy of elected leaders. In Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi States, reports of vote-buying were disturbingly prevalent, casting a shadow over the electoral landscape. The danger it poses to Nigeria’s democracy is multifaceted and must be urgently addressed to preserve the essence of representative governance.

To address the menace of vote-buying and safeguard Nigeria’s democracy, concerted efforts are needed on multiple fronts. Electoral bodies must enhance their monitoring mechanisms to detect and prevent instances of vote-buying. Rigorous oversight and strict enforcement of electoral laws are essential to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. Educating the public about the negative consequences of vote-buying is crucial. Civic education programs should emphasize the importance of making informed choices based on candidates’ merit rather than succumbing to monetary inducements. Continuous review and strengthening of electoral laws are necessary to close loopholes that allow for vote-buying. Penalties for perpetrators should be severe enough to serve as a deterrent.

Communities play a vital role in preventing vote-buying. Empowering citizens to reject such offers and report incidents will contribute to a more vigilant and participatory electoral process.  Implementing transparent campaign financing practices can help reduce the influence of money in politics. Disclosures of campaign contributions and expenditures should be made accessible to the public. Nigerian politicians, especially leaders, must commit to electoral reform and save our democracy from looming death.
