Fuel Price Hits N1,000 Per Litre in Enugu, residents lament
  • February 22, 2024
  • Unity Times

The residents of Enugu State have lamented the continued increment in the pump price of fuel by marketers despite the suspension of the strike declared by the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).

Most of the residents who spoke to the newspaper expressed dismay that, despite the suspension of the strike, marketers have continued to sell the product at exorbitant prices.

They said the marketers now sell Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, for between N850 and N1,000 per litre.

The national president of NARTO, Yusuf Lawal Othman, announced on Tuesday in Abuja the suspension of the strike.

The suspension was announced after a two-day engagement with the federal government at the instance of the minister of state for petroleum resources (oil), Heineken Lokpobiri.

But despite the suspension, most marketers in Enugu, who increased the pump price of fuel to between N850 and N1,000 when NARTO threatened the strike, have refused to reduce the pump price.

A resident of Maryland, Mr. Uchenna Obioma, called on the federal government to call the marketers in Enugu to order.

Another resident, Mrs. Adaku Uwakwe, said it was unfortunate that many marketers have continued to subject people to untold hardship through their selfish actions.

“The federal government should regulate the activities of these marketers who are exploiting people. They increased the pump price because of the planned strike, but now that the strike has been suspended, why are they still selling at exorbitant prices?” she said.
