As political preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gather momentum, Akwa Ibom indigenes resident in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are stepping up efforts to document eligible voters within their community, with leaders claiming that their potential voting population could rival that of a local government area.

The claim emerged during the monthly general meeting of the Akwa Ibom Community in Abuja, presided over by its President, Mkpisong Gabriel Fan, Esq., where members displayed their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a demonstration of their readiness to participate in the next general elections.

The meeting came days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the commencement of PVC collection for eligible registrants following the latest Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

Speaking at the meeting, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Mobilization in Abuja, Dr. Kingsley Iwok, commended the turnout, describing it as a positive response to the Governor’s call for eligible Akwa Ibom people to register and participate in the democratic process.

Iwok pledged to intensify mobilisation efforts to encourage eligible voters to return to Akwa Ibom for the 2027 elections, including support for Governor Eno and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also speaking, the Abuja Chairman of AWRHI, Comrade Tommy Etim Okon, PhD, said the exercise marked the beginning of a broader effort to identify and document eligible Akwa Ibom voters residing in the Federal Capital Territory. He stressed that reliable data would help establish the community’s potential voting strength and guide further mobilisation.

Participants, however, raised concerns about the cost and difficulty of travelling to Akwa Ibom to vote. Okon recalled that transport and logistical support had been provided during previous elections and expressed hope that a more coordinated arrangement would be made ahead of 2027.

The mobilisation initiative underscores the importance of engaging Akwa Ibom indigenes outside the state in the electoral process. With further documentation and practical travel arrangements, the Governor’s Abuja mobilisation office and community leaders hope to translate voter-registration efforts into stronger participation at the polls.
