  • February 22, 2024
  • Unity Times

A lawyer, Adachukwu Okafor, has been remanded at the facility of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of Anambra State Police Command by the Children, Sexual, and Gender-based Violence Court for allegedly abusing her house help.

In a viral video that trended for several days, Adachukwu was seen inflicting severe physical injuries using a hot iron on her 11-year-old-house help, Miss Happiness Nwafor.

The female lawyer was also seen in the video subjecting Happiness to the horrendous treatment in her residence at Chris Igwilo Street, Akpaka GRA, 3-3 Area, a suburb of Onitsha.

Adachukwu was arraigned before the court in Awka, the state capital, on a two-count charge of willfully inflicting physical injuries on Happiness Nwafor, an offence punishable under Section 4(1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition and Protection) Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 2017.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read out to her at the Awka Chief Magistrate Court, where the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court sat yesterday.

The court rejected a bail application brought by her lawyer, Mr. Chijioke Nwankwo, and ordered that she be remanded in the custody of the state police command at the SCID. The court adjourned hearings on the matter to February 28, 2024.
