Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for the immediate release of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing his continued detention as unjust and dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy.
Atiku, in a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, said the country must guard against political persecution and selective application of justice, warning that democratic institutions lose credibility when citizens perceive law enforcement as tools of intimidation.
The former presidential candidate stressed that while no individual is above the law, constitutional rights and due process must remain sacrosanct regardless of political affiliations.
“This is not just about one man,” Atiku reportedly stated. “It is about the future of democratic freedoms in Nigeria.”
The development has sparked heated reactions across political circles, with supporters of El-Rufai describing the detention as politically motivated, while critics insist anti-corruption agencies must be allowed to carry out investigations without interference.
Political analysts say the controversy may deepen existing tensions within opposition blocs ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially as alliances and rivalries continue to shape the nation’s political landscape.
