Nigeria’s fight against terrorism recorded a significant breakthrough as the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed that joint military operations conducted alongside the United States led to the elimination of 175 terrorists linked to ISIS and ISWAP in the Tumbuns and Mandara Mountains.
Military authorities disclosed that the coordinated air interdictions targeted insurgent hideouts, logistics bases, and strategic movement corridors used by terrorists operating across the Lake Chad region and Nigeria’s North-East.
According to defence officials, several high-profile commanders were among those neutralised during the precision strikes, described as one of the most successful multinational operations in recent months.
The Tumbuns axis, notorious for serving as a stronghold for insurgent factions, has long posed security challenges due to its difficult terrain and proximity to regional borders.
Security analysts say the latest operation demonstrates growing intelligence-sharing and operational cooperation between Nigeria and international allies, especially the United States, in combating transnational terrorism.
Military sources added that surveillance drones, aerial reconnaissance systems, and coordinated strike missions played crucial roles in dismantling terrorist enclaves.
While Nigerians welcomed the development, citizens in affected communities continue to call for stronger humanitarian support, reconstruction efforts, and protection for displaced civilians who remain vulnerable to sporadic attacks.
The DHQ reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on insurgent groups until lasting peace is restored across the region.
