The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has intensified health screening procedures at international airports following the World Health Organization’s declaration of a global health emergency over the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
Authorities confirmed that although no Ebola case has been reported in Nigeria, precautionary measures are being strengthened to prevent possible importation of the deadly virus.
Health officials at major airports in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt have commenced enhanced passenger monitoring, including temperature checks, travel history verification, and emergency response preparedness.
The renewed alert comes amid growing concerns over cross-border transmission as international travel and regional migration continue across Africa.
Medical experts warn that Ebola remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, capable of spreading rapidly through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons.
Nigeria’s public health agencies have urged citizens to remain calm while observing hygiene protocols and reporting suspected symptoms promptly.
Public health observers say the country’s swift response reflects lessons learned from the successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s biggest public health victories.
The government has also intensified coordination with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), immigration authorities, and international health partners to maintain surveillance across entry points.
