Wike Threatens Action Against “Unrecognized Political Groups” In Abuja

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has sparked nationwide debate after threatening to sanction event centres allegedly hosting meetings of what he described as “unrecognized political groups.”

According to the Minister, authorities may revoke operational approvals of facilities found violating regulatory conditions.

The remarks immediately generated controversy, with critics accusing the FCT administration of attempting to suppress opposition political gatherings.

Supporters of Wike insist the directive is purely administrative and aimed at maintaining public order.

Civil society groups, however, warn that any attempt to restrict political assembly could damage democratic freedoms ahead of the 2027 elections.
