Fresh concerns over insecurity have emerged following the abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife by suspected terrorists in Katsina State.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges confronting communities across parts of Northern Nigeria despite sustained military operations against criminal and insurgent networks.
Security sources disclosed that the retired military officer and his spouse were reportedly seized during an attack by armed men, prompting urgent rescue efforts by security agencies.
The abduction has generated widespread concern because of the victim’s former role as one of the military’s most visible public communicators during critical national security operations.
The incident comes even as troops continue to record tactical successes across the North-West.
Military authorities recently confirmed the rescue of 31 kidnapped victims during coordinated operations across Katsina and Zamfara States.
Several terrorists were reportedly neutralized during the operations, while security forces recovered weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, and communication equipment used by criminal groups.
Despite these gains, security experts warn that terrorist and bandit networks remain highly adaptive, exploiting difficult terrain, porous borders, and local intelligence gaps.
Analysts argue that while military offensives have weakened several criminal cells, sustainable security will require stronger intelligence coordination, community engagement, technology-driven surveillance, and socio-economic interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity.
